Shopify vs WooCommerce

Shopify and WooCommerce are the two most widely used webshop platforms. Shopify takes care of everything for you; WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a webshop that you control yourself.

The main difference

Shopify is a cloud-based webshop platform: Shopify takes care of hosting, security and updates, and you pay a fixed amount per month. WooCommerce is a free open-source plugin for WordPress: you control the code and the data yourself, but arrange hosting, updates and maintenance yourself.

Costs

Shopify costs from €21 per month with annual billing (Basic); with Shopify Payments you only pay payment costs per transaction, such as €0,29 for iDEAL. WooCommerce itself is free, but you pay for hosting, a domain name, a theme, paid extensions and maintenance. Hosting for a webshop often costs between €15 and €300 per month, depending on traffic.

Choose Shopify if

  • you want to start without a developer or your own hosting;
  • you also sell in a shop and want to use the same stock with Shopify POS;
  • you want to sell in multiple countries, languages and currencies.

Choose WooCommerce if

  • you already have a WordPress website;
  • you want to customise the webshop fully and manage the data yourself;
  • you work with a web agency that knows WordPress.
