The main difference
Microsoft Teams belongs to Microsoft 365, together with Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint and OneDrive; in the European Union you choose a plan with or without Teams, or take Teams on its own. Chat, meetings and files are in one app. Slack is a separate service for chat in channels, with thousands of integrations and shared channels with other organisations via Slack Connect.
Choose Slack if
- your team mainly collaborates asynchronously in channels and connects many other tools;
- you often work with clients or partners in shared channels;
- you do not work with Microsoft 365. Pro costs €6,75 per user per month with annual billing.
Choose Microsoft Teams if
- you already work with Microsoft 365: with a plan that includes Teams, it comes with it;
- you have a lot of meetings, including with large groups;
- you want to co-edit files in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
What to look out for with both
Slack's free plan shows 90 days of message history. Check for both how long messages are kept and which admin settings you need.
