Compare backup software
With backup software you automatically make copies of your business data: files, complete computers and servers, virtual machines or the data in cloud services such as Microsoft 365. If something goes wrong because of a faulty disk, a colleague's mistake or ransomware, you restore the data. A freelancer often needs no more than a backup program for a single laptop. A company with its own servers or many workstations looks for a business backup that you manage in one place.
Online backup or store it yourself?
The first choice is where the copy ends up. With an online backup, also called a cloud backup, the software sends your data to the provider's data centre. Examples are IDrive, Backblaze, Synology C2 Backup for Business and the Dutch Porton. You do not have to manage any storage yourself and the copy is immediately stored off-site.
Other packages you install yourself and they keep the backup on your own equipment. Active Backup for Business, for example, runs on a Synology NAS, and NAKIVO Backup & Replication is there for virtual machines and physical servers, among other things. There are also services for a single purpose, such as a Microsoft 365 backup of your mailboxes, OneDrive and SharePoint. Keepit, Mindtime, 365 Total Backup and Microsoft itself offer these. Acronis Cyber Protect combines backup with security.
What should you look out for?
- What you secure: check whether the package supports your systems: Windows, Mac, Linux, servers, virtual machines, a NAS or cloud services.
- Storage location: find out in which country the backup is stored and whether you choose a region yourself. For personal data, storage in the Netherlands or the EU is often a requirement.
- Restoring: check whether you can restore individual files as well as a complete system, how far back in time you can go and whether recovery costs extra.
- Pricing model: providers charge per user, per device or per GB of storage. Work out what that means for your amount of data, including as it grows.
