Compare survey tools
With a survey tool you can create a survey online, send it and view the responses, without installing anything. You choose the question types, put the questions in the right order and share the questionnaire via a link, by email or on your website. You see the responses in charts and tables. Businesses use survey software for customer satisfaction, employee surveys and market research. Schools, associations and students often just want to create a questionnaire quickly for a single study.
Create a survey for free, or a paid package?
The first choice is how extensive it needs to be. Form builders such as Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, Typeform and Tally are for forms and simple surveys. A survey tool such as SurveyMonkey or Survio is mainly about surveys. For market research on a larger scale there is research software such as Qualtrics, Crowdtech and Survalyzer; with the latter two you can also manage your own panel.
Many providers have a free version. It usually has a limit, for example on the number of responses, surveys or users. If you want to create a survey for free, first check whether that limit suits your research.
What should you look out for?
- Limits: the price often depends on the number of responses per month, the number of surveys or the number of users. Estimate in advance how many responses you expect.
- Questions and logic: check whether the survey program has the question types you need and whether you can skip questions based on earlier answers.
- Results: check whether you can share reports and export the data, for example to Excel or SPSS.
- Privacy: if you ask for personal data, check where the data is stored and whether the supplier signs a data processing agreement with you. Some providers store everything in the Netherlands or the EU.
