Compare presentation software
With presentation software you put text, images, charts and video on slides and show them to a group. You use it for a sales conversation, a training course, a meeting or a pitch. Almost every organisation wants to make a presentation now and then, from freelancer to large company. Presentation software was long only on your own computer. Now, with most packages, you can also make a presentation online and work on the same slides with colleagues at the same time.
PowerPoint or a PowerPoint alternative?
Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides and Keynote are the best-known names. If you are looking for a PowerPoint alternative, there are roughly three kinds. With Canva, Pitch and Beautiful.ai it is all about templates, design and collaborating in the browser. If you want to make a presentation with AI, a package such as Gamma sets up a first version for you from a description or a document. Many other packages now also have such an AI feature.
The third kind is for interaction with your audience. With Mentimeter, AhaSlides, Prezi, the Dutch Sendsteps and the Belgian Wooclap, participants join in on their phones with polls, quizzes and questions.
What should you look out for?
- PowerPoint files: if you often receive or send .pptx files, check whether you can import and export them. Test it with one of your own presentations with a lot of formatting.
- Collaboration and house style: if you work with a team, look for simultaneous editing, shared templates and fixed colours, fonts and logos.
- AI: with many providers you get a number of AI credits or a limit per month. Check what is included in your plan and always proofread a generated text yourself.
- Presenting and sharing: check whether the presentation tool also works without internet, whether you can share the slides with a link and whether you can see who has viewed them.
