Compare cookie banner software

With cookie banner software you put a cookie notice on your website that asks visitors for consent before cookies for statistics or advertising are placed. The software scans your site for cookies, blocks them until the visitor has made a choice and stores that choice as proof. The package often also creates a cookie statement that is updated when cookies are added. Such a cookie consent tool is for every organisation with a website: from the freelancer with a WordPress site to the publisher with dozens of domains. In most packages you can create a cookie banner without programming.

Cookie plugin, standalone tool or consent management platform?

The first choice is how the cookie banner gets onto your site. You install a cookie plugin in your website system. Complianz and Borlabs Cookie, for example, are made for WordPress. A standalone cookie tool such as Cookiebot, CookieYes, CookieFirst or iubenda does not belong to one website system. With CookieYes and CookieFirst, for example, you place a piece of code on your site; for well-known systems there is often a plugin as well.

A consent management platform (CMP) such as Didomi or OneTrust Cookie Consent is for larger organisations with many websites, apps and countries. Would you rather have it done for you? With CookieCode your website builder arranges the banner, with a cookie statement and privacy statement included.

What should you look out for?

  • Pricing model: you pay per domain, by the number of page views or visitors, or a fixed amount per year for a number of websites. Count your websites and check how many visitors you have.
  • Free version: many providers have a free version with a limit, for example one domain or a limited number of page views.
  • Cookie consent and advertising: if you advertise via Google, check whether the package supports Google Consent Mode v2. For advertising networks IAB TCF is sometimes needed too.
  • Languages and storage: check whether you can show the banner in Dutch and your other languages, and where the consents are stored.
